Day 73 – Mile 994.5 to Mile 1011.6

Sunday, July 5. Mid-40s and cloudy going up to upper 60s.

Up at 6:00. It started to rain as I was packing up my tent. The rain fly was very wet and the inner got a bit wet. Got packed and into my rain gear and headed north at 7:15. Basically an ugly morning.

I have a hard 17 miles today and I can’t cut it short. I must be close to Sonora Pass so I can catch the 9:30 a.m. shuttle to Kennedy Meadows tomorrow morning.

Ran into bear scat on the trail for the second time in 2 days. Glad I’m moving out of this area.

First climb of the day done. Passed by Dorothy Lake.

Day 73 Lake View

Reached Dorothy Lake Pass at 9:20. I just exited Yosemite after 5 days.

Crossed 1000 miles at 10:29.

Lunch at noon while I dried my tent from this morning’s rain. More rain is on the forecast around 4:00 today.

Starting my last climb of the day. It’s a big one at 4.5 miles and a bit under 2000 feet of elevation gain.

Two miles into the climb and I loaded up with 4 liters of water (8.8 lbs). There is no more water for 10 miles. Ugh.

The final 2.5 miles of the climb were hard and wide open with occasional rain. Very different terrain! It’s like hiking on the world’s biggest scree field.

Reached camp at 4:45. I’m exhausted. I have 2 bars of cell service, so I had a long call with Pitcrew while I set up camp. This was the first phone or internet service I had in 7 or 8 days.

It’s very cold up here at 10,600 feet with an overcast sky and no sun. I crawled into my quilt at 6:30 and had dinner indoors.

I think it’s almost time for new socks.

Day 73 Need New Socks

Today was another hard day. Big climb, bad Achilles, and generally need some time off. Happy to make camp early. Thought about going further but there are no camp spots listed between here and Sonora Pass.

I have 6.5 miles to go to get to the 9:30 a.m. shuttle. I plan to get up early and hit the trail. No way I want to miss that shuttle as my only other option is to try to hitchhike.

Wow!!! Over 1,000 miles. That’s incredible! We went to Aunt Faye ‘s funeral yesterday. We saw cousins that we haven’t seen for decades! They were really happy to see Mom. We talked for a while after dinner. Unkle Carl’s sons are very nice.

1,000 miles!! That’s amazing. I hope you’re really proud of what you’ve done! Fingers crossed that you make the shuttle tomorrow and that your body embraces the rest!!
